Glossary of Rug Terms (H)
Hand Knotted
The most elaborate and labour-intensive of all rug construction, and found in rug types such as Oriental Rugs.
They are made by tying individual knots to the Warp Strings (vertical strings on loom that become the fringe) and are anchored by the Weft Strings (vertical threads that push the pile together and tighten the weave).
The construction of these rugs is much stronger than hand tufted, hand hooked, flat woven, or machine made rugs.
Hooked
A term used to describe a rug that has been made using loop construction. Also known as Gross Point rugs, Hooked rugs have large loops (1/2 inch high) forming the pile.
