Glossary of Rug Terms (A)

Antique Washes

Also known as Teawashes.

A herbal tea or chemical bathing process that tones down colours to bestow an 'aged' quality to the rug.

Aubusson

A complex flatweave that originated in France in the 15th century. The term is used generically to describe large-scale floral and medallion motifs that have a simple field, floral corners and elaborate floral borders. Designs have evolved to include simpler patterns with the weave remaining complex. This type of rug may be in virtually any construction.
